the background to essays

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Possibly the most famous quote from one of the most influential films of the 1980s – Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. It’s a film that redefined science fiction – no longer was future society painted as being a heavenly utopia, instead what we got was a dark, wet gritty depressing vision of Los Angeles in the year 2019. The film went on to influence such films as Akira, The Matrix and Ghost in the Shell. The above quote comes at the film’s climax as one of the replicants reaches the end of his programmed lifespan.
Over the course of my life, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking. From when I wake up, though the day to when I go to bed. It occurred to me after watching Blade Runner that all these things that I think about are things I never really talk to people about and it’s a shame because they help define who I am. It’s a combination of being a loner and not really having many people who would sit and listen to me and even fewer who’d care. So rather than all these thoughts eventually being lost to time as in the quote I decided to set up this blog where I’ll try and transfer my thoughts into words (much harder than it sounds) and create some essays.
